Hello, all,

I hope this email finds you well and that you all had a wonderful holiday season.

2020 is the Year of the Nurse! The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated 2020 as the “Year of the Nurse”, in honor of the 200th birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale! What a year to be a nurse! I, for one, am incredibly proud and honored to be able to work as a registered nurse. Nursing is not just a job, it is a mindset, a way of life. We don't just "clock-in" to do what we do. We are passionate, hardworking, and dedicated to helping people become the best they can be. We practice with high standards, integrity, professionalism, and dedication. Every day, I am reminded of this when I am working with fine public health nurses such as yourselves.  I am proud to be a nurse!

The National TB Nurse Coalition (NTNC) is comprised of public health nurses from around the country who are specialized in case management of persons who have tuberculosis infection or disease. We are proud contributors to the NTCA. Historically, the registered nurses, have taken the lead when it comes to the creation of educational tools, models, and documents, etc. Our hope is to continue to create and share effective, user-friendly tools to help others become more comfortable when providing case management to our patients.

Getting involved is a great way to meet others in our field, share experiences and tools, and make a positive contribution toward public health nursing. The NTNC is seeking nominations for several positions for 2020-2021. We are seeking motivated, driven, passionate nurses to maintain this momentum! If YOU are that person and are interested in making a real difference, please let me know. I would love to get you on the ballot! Elections will be this spring, so please do not delay!

NURSING TIPS: When preparing to administer any drug to a client, consider what is often referred to as the "Five Rights" of medication administration:

  • Right client
  • Right route
  • Right drug
  • Right dose
  • Right time

A sixth right often mentioned, but not part of the original five, is the right documentation. Don't forget to administer the drug to the client first, and then document. Documenting beforehand is considered falsification of documentation and is a violation of the nurse practice act.
