Hello all,

Has anyone received an update on the Rifapentine shortage? Our pharmacy is still out and said Cardinal is telling them they still do not have it.

Thanky ou,

NURSING TIPS: When preparing to administer any drug to a client, consider what is often referred to as the "Five Rights" of medication administration:

§  Right client

§  Right route

§  Right drug

§  Right dose

§  Right time

A sixth right often mentioned, but not part of the original five, is the right documentation. Don't forget to administer the drug to the client first, and then document. Documenting beforehand is considered falsification of documentation and is a violation of the nurse practice act.

What I am hearing from Sanofi, as recently as yesterday, is as follows:

I believe shipment was sent to our facility at Ridgefield (2/10) to be sent out to the designated wholesalers who ordered supply. They’ve began shipping out to them as of (2/13).

I assume that shipping was not done at once, to all distributors, as the reference is to “began shipping.”  Also, I assume there is a lag time between when the product arrives and when it is catalogued as inventory and available for distribution which is why we are not seeing immediate replenishment of inventory.

I did share with my Sanofi contact what Ann was told to see if we could get greater clarity and an explanation for the disconnect between the above and what the company shared with Ann.

Will share any updates as I receive them.  It is very helpful to have the reports from all of you so we can a) demonstrate that this is not isolated to a single distributor or a single geographic area and b) demonstrate what TB care on the front lines involves of our nurses and program staff.

With gratitude,

Donna

I just reached out to the manufacturer this morning and they told me there is on backorder until (at least) the end of February.  Sanofi is the manufacturer.

Hi Donna,

Our pharmacy is telling us they still cannot get priftin, even after we shared this information you sent us last week. Is there an update on this?

All,

It is my understanding, from conversations with Sanofi and the FDA, that inventory of 3HP/priftin was shipped to distributors yesterday which should address all current backorders and provide adequate supply for February orders.  A second shipment is scheduled for March.

We encourage you to reach out to your distributors today to see if the inventory has reached them and when they anticipate fulfilling orders. The NTCA Board is to review a statement for release to ALL programs and posting on the NTCA website later today or tomorrow. The timing of these challenges is never ideal but as the new LTBI guidelines are scheduled for publication on Thursday, February 13 (two days), adequate supply of priftin is a priority as the short-course treatments are recommended for the treatment of LTBI.

It is very helpful to have these real-time reports of supply disruptions, distribution challenges or shortages.  Please continue to reach out to your colleagues and to NTCA so we are all kept current in our understanding of these, seemingly ongoing, challenges.

In partnership,

Donna
