Some of our local jurisdictions rely heavily on incentives to get patients to buy into and continue DOT. We have different options for incentives depending on the patients’ wants/needs.

Grocery cards (some can be used for gas where the grocery store has gas station), monthly bus passes, paying for monthly cell bill (as long as it’s under $100 a month), AMEX gift cards are some examples of what we have used. We generally give $25 a week or up to $100 a month in incentives.

If incentives do not work, we do have statutory measures that the local health director can order DOT as a first step in the legal process. So sorry, no help to you.

Subject: Cases Who Refuse DOT

Good afternoon, hoping to get some feedback on what other programs are doing for cases that refuse DOT and are self-administering? We have no legal authority to require DOT but it is an expectation for active TB cases. In addition to the programmatic flow in these instances, are there any changes to whether the public health department will supply the medication?

Thanks for any recommendations you may have in advance.

Chanda
