Hello all,

Nurses generally do not carry epi pens. I can only speak for Colorado and WI, having lived, trained and worked there as well.

Amy,

Here in NH the nurses don’t carry Epi pens when doing DOT. They do however when they are planting TST’s.

All,

I am interested to know if your agency policies require the nurses to carry epinephrine while performing DOT of po meds (ie - INH, Rif, EMB, PZA) in the home? Are your nurses carrying epi when giving injectables?

Hi Amy,

In some of the clinics in NJ the DOT is provided by non-medical personnel which cannot administer the epi. And they do not bring an emergency kit. They are all provided with phones in case they need to call 911.

However, the clinics’  have standing orders to administer epi or Benadryl in clinic if need be.

Whenever possible, the first few doses of DOT (oral and injectable) are given in the clinic to observe the patient. If a nurse is doing the DOT some clinics will bring an emergency kit especially in the beginning or if they could not be observed in the clinic.

Hi Amy,

No our DOT providers/nurses don’t carry an emergency kit when providing PO meds. We do carry an emergency kit (injectable Benadryl and Epinephrine) when giving injectable.
